The world at the moment is annually producing about 133 million tonnes. There are 110 countries involved in its production. It is estimated that 25 million tonnes is dumped on the world market below the market price.

Pure Cane Sugar, the kind C&H uses exclusively, is refined from sugarcane plants. The first cultivated sugar crop, sugarcane is grown above ground and nurtured in fresh tropical breezes under warm sunshine. Beet sugar, found in some store brands and in other makers that often don't specify the source, is extracted from beets grown underground as a root crop.

Brazil Sugar



Brazil is a large sugar producer (over 36 million tons in 2009), but with very low production of white refined, Icumsa 45 (near 1.5 million tons/year). We should also know that this sugar is disputed by more than 20 large traders. To fulfil the need of sugar producers for finance and security, sugar is traded before production. Therefore, third parties, new comers, will not be able to get large quantities. Most Icumsa 45 is committed in advance to those traders. So, random offers, like 100,000 mt, and more, are just nice dreams. Most Brazilian sugar for export is raw brown (VHP), for the refineries to produce Icumsa 45. Brazil also exports large volumes of white crystal sugar, Icumsa 150 (which is perfect for human consumption), mostly in containers.

Thai Sugar

Opportunities to supply sugar to growing markets in Asia have encouraged Thailand to expand production. With relatively small internal needs for sugar and low shipping costs, especially to growing regional markets, Thailand has become one of the world's leading exporters. The Government policy of maintaining high domestic sugar prices has fostered increased production, dampened growth in use, and increased exportable surpluses.

The export availability in Thailand, the world's second largest exporter, is likely to be further reduced. In March, the Office of Cane and Sugar Board downgraded the2009/10 crop projection to 6.8-6.9 mln tons of sugar, taking into account a negative impact on cane by a serious drought in the northern part of the country. As a result, sugar exports are expected to drop to around 4.7 mln tons for the season, down from 5.1 mln in 2008/09.

Thailand is already Indonesia's biggest sugar supplier, accounting for 45-50 per cent of the minimum 2.5 million tonnes imported each year, followed by Australia at 25 per cent.
