 Pure coconut oil

pure coconut oil and how does this differ from other coconut oil products which are not labeled as organic?  Is organic coco oil more beneficial?

To understand this better, let us define what organic means, what organic foods are and how they are classified.

Organic farming is a form of agriculture that uses the traditional way – no artificial fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, and other new technologies – in growing plants, raising animals, and producing food products.  When coconut oil is marked as organic, the manufacturers give an assurance that they use organic farming or use organic ingredients.

Pure Coconut oil that is primarily saturated and contains medium chain fatty acids is definitely one of the good fats. Its 92% saturated fat content raises concern over the adverse effects it may cause on one’s health. Recent discoveries however prove that coconut oil has a 62% concentration of Medium Chain Fatty acids (MCFAs). This is coconut oils’ unique characteristic that is not present in other saturated fat. It may even be healthier than most saturated oils. Unsaturated fat have a high concentration of long chain fatty acids unlike MCFAs which are easily absorbed by the body as it require less energy and fewer enzymes, thereby improving digestion.

Coconut Oil is expelled from the kernel of well matured coconuts. It is regarded as the best cooking oil imparting taste and aroma. Traditionally coconut oil is manufactured by expeller-pressing of copra. Coconut oil is the most used type oil among Asians and they consume same through their daily meal.

Refined Coconut Oil

Refined Coconut Oil is the most used form of coconut oil worldwide, if not the purest or the best. It is also known by the name of RBD Coconut Oil, which stands for Refined, Bleached & Deodorized Coconut Oil. Actually, the oil that is expelled directly from copra is not fit for consumption since it may contain dust particles, insect remains, spawns, microbes, fungal spores and many other such substances which may be harmful for health. You may wonder that how these things get into coconut oil. You would have found the answer to this had you seen how coconut kernels are dried to Copra. In most cases (Frankly, in almost every case) the kernels are cut open and spread open in the strong sun to dry up, with their flesh facing the sun. They are kept like that for days, weeks and even months until they dry up as desired. They are not even covered with nets. Now, you can well imagine what happens in between. All the dust and every possible inedible substance fall into them. Further, all those curious insects, birds, rodents and other animals pay a regular visit to them to see what’s happening (actually, to taste what’s happening). Again, in absence of sufficiently strong sun or in cloudy weather, there are plenty of chances of fungal growth in them (they are neither thrown away nor cleaned before expelling). So, that leaves us with no choice but to clean the oil instead.Specifications

Copra

Two types of copra namely milling and edible are made in India. Milling copra is used to extract oil while edible grade of copra is consumed as a dry fruit and used for religious purposes. Milling copra is generally manufactured by adopting sun drying and artificial means. Substantial quantity of milling copra is manufactured using modern hot air driers resulting in the availability of superior quality copra which is required for the manufacture of best grade coconut oil. A good number of farmers' co-operative societies are also involved in the manufacture and marketing of milling copra. Milling copra is available in different grades. Edible copra is made in the form of balls and cups. Different grades of edible copra are available in the market according to the size, colour etc.

All refined, mass-produced coconut oils are made from copra. Unless a coconut oil says it is made from fresh coconut, you can assume with a fairly high degree of certainty, that it's made from copra. Copra is the dried out white flesh of the coconut. It can be dried either in the sun, using a kiln, smoke, or a combination of the above. The copra is put in a hydraulic press and heat and great pressure is applied to extract the oil. All oil extracted from standard copra must then be refined, bleached, and deodorized because the way copra is usually dried out is not done according to strict sanitation procedures. So, it must be processed in order to make it suitable for human consumption.

Coconut shell powder

INTRODUCTION:

Coconut shell powder is made from coconut shells and is used as a filler in the manufacture of thermoset moulding powders like bakelite, synthetic resin glues or phenol formaldehyde. Availability of adequate quantity of coconut shells is the most critical aspect. It is imperative to locate reliable sources for regular supplies and the location of the factory has to be finalised accordingly. Mesh size of 80-100 is suitable for thermoset moulding powder whereas for synthetic resin glues the size has to be around 230-240 mesh. Product provides substantial value-addition as normally shells are either thrown away or used as a fuel. The preferred locations are Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra.

Coconut shell powder is an industrial product and is considered to be suitable and cheap filler compared to others. It is easy to manufacture and results in considerable value-addition.

The coconut shell powder is mainly manufactured from matured coconut shells and is used as filler in the manufacture of thermoset moulding powder like synthetic resin glues, mosquito coils, bakelite, etc. The coconut shell powder is mainly used in plywood and laminated board industry as a phenolic extruder. The coconut shells are cleaned and broken into small pieces and then fed into pulveriser. The powder obtained is fed into rotor lift, coiled and passed through dresser to have required particle size. The rejects from the dresser are sent back for reprocessing thus reducing the wastage. The product sizes manufactured in Ausvan ranges from 80-200 mesh. The product are double screened and redusted in the process prior to the packaging to prevent dust and any other foreign particles.
